This is great for updating instructions for just about anything!

Add to this list of iItems that a Wiki would have expediated in the 1990s:

Co-authoring books, manuals, policy and procedures, research

On-line classroom instruction

Schedules

Program planning

Ordering

Organizing community resources in a way that the community organizations can edit and add to their own information

Book Reviews

Subject Guides

Programming Ideas

Sample Storytimes

Did someone say they wanted a table of contents? Linking to other pages in a wiki is nice and easy by clicking the name of the page (or of an uploaded file) in the sidebar on the right. ~Sylvana

I like wikis better since watching the video.  I like the library wikis that have their policies and procedures on them.  I will try to start using wikis more.

I learned that "wiki" in Hawaiian means QUICK. Wiki enables one to cordinate a shared goal so much quicker without redundancy. ...itsjustathing

Wow!  This is pretty cool.  All of a sudden I have access to everything written on this page.  I'm now having an inner debate of whether or not to use my newfound powers for good or evil.........For now I'll stick with good.  -Nik

I suppose I have to plug my own wiki -- http://librarytwopointoh.pbwiki.com/ :)

I created it as a way of keeping track of different implementations of Library 2.0 as well as next-generation OPACs. It still needs some work and cleaning up, but it might showcase some examples that you can get inspired by. I'm also always up for submissions. --Diana

I tried the book review wiki and liked that idea.  I think wikis may be differnt in a public vs. an educational arena.  But it's certainly an interesting idea to have the stakeholders creating content.

Wikipedia is great for looking up info that may not have made it to standard print resources. It is contemporary and relevant, and that is what I think wikis should be, as well as easily manageable and accessible The collaborative effort is a plus if the focus and organization is clear, and the expertise of the contributors makes for meaningful content.  I think that is the key; otherwise it is just another collection of the banal, put together by the uninformed.

Wiki-wiki-wiki!  If possible, I am going to set one up for our staff at BT.  I really liked the one done by the Albany Public Library Staff and plan to 'borrow' a few of their ideas.  We have a few wikis at sjcpls--unfortunately the one I'm supposed to participate in keeps locking me out....we haven't figured out why. The concept, however, is fabulous and once the kinks are worked out I think it'll be a great time saver. msb  Looking forward to seeing and using it. DM

Amen.

After reading the wiki, all I could think about was organization. So I googled organizing a wiki. Didn't find quite what I was looking for, however did find an interesting link to wiki notepads. This might be a good way for me to organize my rambling thoughts.  Will post more on my blog.   jerseygirl63

I found the Common Craft vide very helpful. A great wiki that I just joined is the New Librarians Online Community:

Wiki's are great for "public" collaborations, and subject/resource guides because they are so much easier to update!  Perhaps Brad would not mind a creation of a Wiki for the NEFLIN's Board of Director's Meeting Minutes!!  It sure would assist in the correction of the minutes by the Board before they are approved and placed on the NEFLIN website!

Captain Barbossa:

"There be a lot of long words in there, miss. We're naught but humble pirates."

From 23 Frogs in a Blog: a pleasing quote to continue the nautical theme of 23cows:

Hello fellow wiki writers! I like wikis just fine but it sure seems that the ning is the way to go professionally. It offers so much more in the way of organization for those of us who may have a number of projects running at the same time. my 2 cents- bookersgirl

My favorite library wiki is the LIS Wiki.  It has about 1,300 articles.  I have used it a lot for library school recently. --Gail

Woohoo!  I am officially a "writer!"  Well, according to the logon... this is a lot of fun and a great way of communicating with others in your field and/or interest groups.  I'm still astounded at all these tools that help make the work and home-life so much more simpler when working on the web.  Previously, I really haven't understood wikis but after watching the video things have become so much more clear.  ~ LJS

The videos are good introductions to what the Things are, and give simple ideas of practical applications.  But you have to actually get in there and do it to really understand what it's all about. There, I've added my words of wisdom....what POWAAHHHH-BwaaHaHaHa...!

23 Things really has taught me so much. I knew what a wiki was but I didn't really know how editing happend. I agree that the videos are helpful. Hope you all will visit my blog at elynn23.blogspot.com

There is so much to learn and so much to explore...have to say it has been fun even while it has challenged. Newleaf

23 integrates the ideas well .  I find myself thinking about this on and off throughout the day: This is not an intentional effort on my part:  It must be part of the subliminal seduction of the 23 Things.

O.K.- I give up-don't see, can't find ,no can do check or uncheck a button to not recieve every post here in my email! Hey I'll trade ya emails? Anyway I'm toooo busy solving the meaning of life to keep looking for this. If it's sooooo important it should be as big as a page-whole page, just one button<PRESS  HERE>. Franque

Franque, if you look up in the righthand corner where your email address is, under that it says account.  Click on that and go to Home.  In there you can change how often you receive notice of new posts.  Newleaf

ALOAH, to all of you out there ! I just learned that Wiki means " quick " in hawaiian. Neflin's 23 Things has been an adventure, can't wait to see what we will learn next !!! Barbara

This is to answer the question of “Why [just] 23 things”? People are finite beings: this is the reason. Would you rather Neflin Infinite Things? No! Placing the number of ‘23’ in this title creates a boundary for us to think of and to think past. We, as a people, push limits-always have, always will- hence speeding tickets for one. The title “Neflin23 Things” sets a parameter for us to reach, to strive for, while knowing internally when we do we will then surpass it. We must drive 65mph before we can reach 70 mhp and get that ticket. Go ahead- I dare you! Show me, name for me, the 24th thing!  Oh, darn, that’s right-we’ve got to do 23 first! Franque

Wikis are so much fun!! I could say whatever I wanted; it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks! I reign supreme while I'm editing, but whoever's next can erase whatever I've accomplished. It's a very democratic system! :-)  -Christine

I certainly enjoyed the video about Wikis. It did explain them in very simple terms. By the time I see a Wiki, it has been "jazzed" up with graphics, etc and it looks complicated. This seems pretty easy. I'l like to use this for book reviews and or pathfinders for our library.

Wikis CAN be intimidating to some. I think it's merely a fear of the unknown. This THING is a great opportunity for folks to give it a go! Great THING! -Juli

This is certainly easy.

I am enjoying the Things way more than I expected although it consumes so much time.  Very interesting to read some of the library wikis although some of the headings do not have much in content or maybe I'm expecting too much and have to get with the wiki idea that people would contribute if they were so inspired.

Caryl

Well dang, Here I am writing my first wiki.. Pretty exciting stuff, this is.   -- Tiffany

This is my debut as a wiki writer. I enjoyed the wiki sites, and I learned a ton of stuff about new books on the library wikis....I even learned about Shelfari.   Cool!

What is the significance of the number 23. Is it arbitrary? Is it the latest value of one's stock portfolio?  Wasn't  Benjamin Harrison the 23rd president. Why 23!!? Of course it is a prime number, but why choose that number?

This is my first wiki entry   so this is an ENTRY for thing 12  wooh wee we are almost finished. Gotta love Neflin for dragging us into WEB 2.0 or are almost to 3 by now.

I love how this  has just become basically a string of stream of consiousness posts.  I almost broke precedent by writing something useful and informational, but what fun would that be?  I know, stop being so picky - this is just to get people used to being able to edit sttuff on a wiki.  Mission accomplished! - TheNonLibrarian

I think I'm going to sleep on the wiki idea... I hadn't given wikis much credence but now I'm ready to view them in a new light! LMC

Whoopee! I can edit this wiki! I have really enjoyed the Neflin 23 Things so far. I think a wiki's effectiveness is dependent on how many people participate in the making of it.-Pat Cloud

La la la. Writing on a wiki. Good Saturday morning to all you wikiers in wiki land. Wikiwiki.

Click here to have a cat and a laugh. Love from the Union County Chicks.

Hi everyone! My first wiki ever-it's been fun doing the 23 Neflin Things! I have learned so many new "Things", and I have been utilizing much of the information I have learned through this.

I could  easily spend all my time on these Things.  When I do I don't get much work done.

Whenever I hear the word "Wiki" I think of Wikki Stix.  Remember those?  -- Robin  loans pay day

I want to wring the wiki out of Wiki...grrr... I don't know if it is just me, but from some of the above comments, I don't think that is true. It took me ten minutes just to login to the right kind of wiki to leave a comment on here. Sigh...I suppose this is better than shelving though. Well I'm going to keep playing around with it. Good luck to everyone else.

Wikis are great to use for personal things like planning a family dinner and assigning who brings what. Half way through 23 things. I am not sure my brain can hold much more. :-)

Thankfully, I already had a pbwiki account. I haven't put it to much use other than creating a wiki. I wanted to use it to discuss books with elementary students but the creating an account and having passwords and usernames has proven to be a problem. I still think I can use it for book talks, discussions and book clubs with faculty.
Now that I know about all these cool Things I can post on my wiki, I will update it and share it with friends, family and colleagues.

Not too sure yet how or if I'll use a wiki at school with the students. Still exploring. I've learned alot. I'm on brain overload. But I'll keep on going. Hooray, we are at the half-way point.
